About the project
The new Parliament buildings are more than a construction project - they’re redefining sustainable design in New Zealand. Join this guided site visit for an inside look at the project and hear from the team leading this landmark development.
Built with local timber, the Ballantrae Place and Museum Street buildings have both achieved world-leading 6 Green Star ratings - a testament to their energy efficiency, climate resilience, and environmental leadership.
The Museum Street building, currently under construction, will soon become New Zealand’s largest mass timber structure built to Importance Level 4, the highest seismic design level. Its engineered timber frame is not only flexible and resilient but also drastically reduces the project’s carbon footprint compared with traditional steel or concrete.
World-leading energy performance
Museum St: 47% less energy use, 52% lower peak electricity demand, 83% fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
Ballantrae Place: 29% less energy use, 40% lower peak demand, 49% fewer emissions.
Locally sourced NZ timber
Supports Kiwi jobs and manufacturing.
Mass timber supplied by Red Stag Timber Lab (Rotorua) and Nelson Pine (Nelson).
Mass timber benefits
Renewable, low-carbon alternative to steel and concrete.
Sequesters carbon and significantly reduces the project’s footprint.
Provides seismic resilience through flexibility and strength.
Cost-effective: exposed timber reduces need for interior finishes.
Healthy indoor environment
Enhanced air quality, daylight, and acoustics for staff wellbeing and productivity.
